Ikonen-Museum Recklinghausen
The Museum of Icons in Recklinghausen which was
opened in 1956 is the most significant museum of East
Christian art outside the Orthodox countries.
More than 1000 icons, embroideries, miniatures, wood
and metal objects from Russia, Greece and other Balkan
countries give an extensive general view of the various
subjects and the stylistic development of icon painting
and the applied arts in the Christian East. A wood carved
iconostasis gives an impression of the position of
icons in the Orthodox churches.
Outstanding objects in the Coptic Department of the
museum document the transition from the pagan Late
Antiquity to Early Christianity in Egypt. Reliefs in wood
and stone, fabrics, glasses, bronzes and crosses as well as
mummy portraits show the variety of artistic activities in
Egypt from the first century up to the early Middle Ages.
