Maahenki is a publishing house in Helsinki, Finland, that specializes in high-quality books on nature, art and everyday culture. The accent in its art publishing is on Orthodox church art, contemporary folk art and environmental aesthetics. The majority of its publications are in Finnish, but there are also some in English or in both languages side by side. Careful attention is paid to the beauty and general outward appearance of the books.
Books in EnglishThe company’s most successful publication internationally has been Athos – Monastic Life on the Holy Mountain, produced in conjunction with an exhibition of the art treasures of the monastic community of Mount Athos held at Helsinki City Art Museum in 2006–2007. This magnificent volume has an abundance of illustrations in colour and contains a number of articles by internationally renowned experts. It will provide a valuable document of this unique exhibition for a long time to come. Books in FinnishThe magazine Ikonimaalari (“Icon Painter”), devoted to icon painting and the art of the Eastern churches, is published twice a year. Bishop Arseni’s book Ikoneja kansalle. Vanhoja venäläisiä painokuvaikoneja (“Icons for the People: Old Russian Printed Icons”) is the first publication in the world to tell the history of printed icons.
